Why it matters

China makes excellent building materials — Australia tests them hard

China is the dominant source for Australian construction imports — steel, ceramic tiles, glass, aluminium profiles, timber, bathroom fixtures, and PVC. The supply chain is mature, but building materials carry a compliance layer that general merchandise does not. Every material class has an Australian Standard (AS/NZS), and the National Construction Code (NCC) governs what can legally be installed — even though NCC compliance is not checked at customs. Plumbing products need WaterMark certification, which many Chinese factories do not produce by default unless requested. And anti-dumping duties apply to several steel categories (a 10% tariff was imposed on steel ceiling frames in February 2026) independently of ChAFTA. We confirm the right standards evidence — ideally third-party tested — before production, so what arrives can actually be used on site.

  • NCC compliance isn't checked at customs but determines what can legally be installed — non-compliant materials can clear the border yet be unusable on site.
  • WaterMark certification for plumbing products is not produced by default — it must be specified and verified before production starts.
  • Anti-dumping duties apply to several steel categories (e.g. ceiling frames, 10% from Feb 2026) on top of, and independent of, ChAFTA rates.

Our process

How we source construction materials from China

Five checkpoints — with compliance evidence confirmed at the factory, not the wharf.

We authenticate the business licence and confirm a real manufacturer — not a middleman.

3

Factory audit

On the ground in China, we assess capability, quality systems, and standards understanding.

5

Ship with confidence

Goods clear to ship with verified compliance documentation — no border surprises.

Why importers trust us with construction materials

Every factory we recommend has been physically vetted against a 12-point verification process — business licence, production capacity, quality systems, and compliance evidence. You buy direct and own the relationship.

What we verify against

The key Australian Standards and certifications we verify when sourcing construction materials from China:

AS 3958Ceramic tiles — residential & commercial
AS/NZS 2208Safety glass — toughened/laminated glazing
AS/NZS 3678/3679Structural steel — grade, yield, weld quality
AS 2047Windows & external glazed doors
WaterMarkMandatory certification for plumbing products
AS/NZS 4266Formaldehyde limits — MDF & particleboard

A product can clear customs and still be illegal to install if it doesn't meet the relevant AS/NZS standard and NCC. We confirm standards evidence — ideally independent lab testing — before production, not after delivery.
